Dieter Zander sharing his story at Oasis Community Church

This past summer I reconnected with some of my friends seminary, because my former roommate and good friend Ty Schenzel along with his wife, Terri were involved in a fatal car crash. So sad to see them go! You can read more about it on one of my earlier posts here…

Dieter Zander’s Story

One of the seminary friends I reconnected with was Dieter Zander. Dieter was one of most gifted public speakers and worship leaders I’ve ever met. He planted a successful church in Southern California, which he started while he was in seminary. Then he went one to be one of the pastors at Willow Creek Church in the Chicago area.

Dieter was in demand as a speaker, and he had written some books.

Then boom, lightning, one night he had a stroke, which left him partially paralyzed and affected his speech.

Since that night, God has done a profound work in Dieter’s life through these difficult and even tragic circumstances. Just a couple of weeks ago on January 10th he shared his story at Oasis Community Church in Phoenix.

I wanted to post it, because I believe that you will find it inspirational and a source of great encouragement. Let me know what you think of Dieter’s story after you watch it. I’m including the link here in case you prefer to watch it that way: Lighthing, Thunder, and Living Water.

I’d love to hear how Dieter’s story touched you! Also, I’d appreciate your prayers for Dieter as he ministers at Trader Joe’s and as the Lord opens up more opportunities for him to share his story.

Get Ready for Take-off!

This year is getting off to a rocket like start, and I feel like I’ve hardly had a chance to stop and catch my breath!

There are a number of good things going on. I’ll highlight a few of them here.

The biggest and most exciting development is that we are beginning to work on putting together a new church planting project in Ensenada. Ensenada has a population of over 500,000 and it lies 78 miles south of San Diego. There is only one small Presbyterian church in this city.

Our good friends Jesus “Petri” Petrikowsky and his wife, Yudy will be leading this church plant. They went through our church planting assessment center in November and they came through highly qualified to plant a church.

Please pray with us as I am working with the church in Mexico as well as supporting churches in the U.S. with the goal of getting this project off the ground towards the later half of this year. The project is off to a good start, but we still have a ways to go.

Dawn and I were at Redeemer San Diego’s missions conference this past weekend. Petri and Yudy attended the conference with us. We had the opportunity to meet a number of interested people, and to share about the vision of this church plant.

A New Church Plant in TJ!

I’m also excited about the next church plant we will partner with pastor Daniel Nuñez on. This church plant is also in the initial stages. I’m praying and working with pastor Daniel on raising the funds and looking for the right church planter. Join us in prayer for this wonderful opportunity as well.

One update on the network of churches formerly known as Lo Mejor del Trigo is that the name has changed to Ministerios Transformación (Transformation Ministries).

After some time of agonizing over this decision Daniel along with his leaders decided to change the name of their ministry. A new name, but the same vision and call.

Short-term Missions Opportunities
Maria with her young child

Maria with her young child. God touched Maria and brought her to faith during our last Medical outreach in Ensenada

The other ministry opportunities that are coming up soon are short-term outreach projects in Ensenada and Tijuana. We will be holding another medical outreach in Ensenada in early April. In March one or two groups of young adults are coming to Tijuana for outreach using sports and fun activities for children.

One of the reasons I’ve felt so busy is that even though we haven’t begun these projects yet there’s a lot of work and effort that goes into planning and preparing. If we don’t prepare well we will not be successful.

I am feeling the need to schedule in some space for extra time to pray, to think, to meditate and even to plan. Pray with me that I will be disciplined to set aside the time for that.

Thank you dear friends for standing with us as we seek to make advances for the kingdom!

“Rejoice in the Lord always; and again I say, Rejoice.” —Philippians 4:4

One of my goals for this year is to practice Philippians 4:8. In this passage Paul exhorts the church to think on good and even excellent things. Too often my thoughts are toxic, so this is an excellent reminder for me.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8, emphasis mine)
One of the ways to think on things of excellence, and things that are praiseworthy is to remember the good things that the Lord gives us each day. I realize that too often I pray for something, and the Lord answers and rather than focusing on his goodness and his faithfulness to provide I start to think about the next mountain I have to climb. Jesus does want us to stop to give thanks for all that he is doing in our lives.
The Lord’s Answer! Amazing!

Dawn and I were working for and praying for a strong year-end in 2015. December is always an important month for us as the Lord provides through his people, and we catch up financially from some of our slower months. A strong December means a solid start to the new year in January.

This last year Dawn and I prayed and looked at our budget and we felt that we needed $35,000 to finish the year strong. A few days before the end of the year we were at about 80% of our goal. We continued to pray as the year drew to a close. It takes a week or more after December 31st for us to know for sure how much comes in.
When I checked it last week it was at $33,000, and Dawn and I were praising the Lord that we came so close to reaching our goal. Then I checked again this week, and another gift came in at the last moment of $2,000, which put us over $35,000.
More Abundantly Than All That We Ask or Think
The Lord even exceeded what we asked for! Thank you Jesus!
Another passage that the Lord has had me meditating on is Ephesians 3:20,21.
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20, 21 ESV, emphasis mine)
Rejoice with us and Pray with us
We appreciate your continued prayers

We appreciate your continued prayers

I felt like it was important to share this good news, because I asked you to pray. I asked you to give so that we could reach this goal. The Lord used many friends to make this possible. We give thanks to the Lord for his good work, and for his people.

I would like to encourage you to think about the excellent and praiseworthy things each day. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

2016 Here We Go!
JD Pearring in the center on the left side sharing with the LMT leadership

JD Pearring in the center on the left side sharing with the LMT leadership

2016 got off to a great start for us. Dawn, Hannah and I met with pastors and leaders from Lo Mejor del Trigo (LMT). It’s always a highlight for us to connect with these friends.

Another ministry friend of ours, JD Pearring challenged all of us to be faithful to share the good news of Christ. Even pastors need to be reminded to follow Jesus example to be about our Father’s business.

James in Acts 15:9 says, “Therefore my judgment is that we should not trouble those of the Gentiles who turn to God.” James assumes that people who aren’t yet believers are interested in turning to God.

The Spirit is at work all around us, and we need to stay faithful to share this good news.

JD’s words were a healthy and needed exhortation to all of us.

Share the Gospel, Plant Churches

Pastor Daniel Nuñez praying for all the pastors and leaders of LMT

The reason we plant churches is we believe the task it not done. There are people who need to hear the gospel. There are lives that are being transformed by Christ, and that are yet to be transformed. God is on the throne. Hallelujah!

The Lord has blessed LMT with some outstanding leaders who love Jesus. Daniel Nuñez and LMT have a compelling vision to see 50 churches planted. They just planted number 26 in November.

I’m working on raising the funds to help them plant the 27th church this Spring. Pray that the Lord works and makes this happen!

It excites me to be a part of a movement that is growing like this one is. Such good people, but even sharp men and women need support and encouragement.

Gospel Coaching & LMT
Dave sharing a few words about the value of coaching at the LMT meeting

Dave sharing a few words about the value of coaching at the LMT meeting

I’ve been working with LMT on strengthening their coaching. Daniel and I hope to see every pastor with a coach. This will create a stronger movement, and it gives the pastors a place to go during the fight. It’s not easy to lead a church, and it’s next to impossible when you go it alone.

Pastor Daniel asked me to share a few words about coaching during the meeting last week. I enjoyed the opportunity to minister to this wonderful group of servants of the Lord.

Join Us in Prayer

Pray with us as the year gets underway that Lo Mejor del Trigo will continue to grow and be strengthened. Pray that the Lord gives Pastor Daniel Nuñez wisdom as he leads this movement. Pray for a growing group of gospel coaches to come alongside these leaders.

New Year, New Opportunities

2015 - 2016I’m thankful for a new year with all the new opportunities. 2015 was an outstanding year in many ways. That’s not to say that we didn’t experience some difficult days, but the Lord brought us through the darkness. He grew us and matured us. I feel comforted knowing that the Lord has a purpose in every circumstance we encounter.

Despite the trials of 2015 we also saw some of the greatest accomplishments and victories that we’ve seen in all our years of ministry! I highlighted a number of them in my last post.

Praying for an Outstanding 2016
Dave & Dawn

Dave & Dawn

Dawn and my prayer is that 2016 will be an even better year, as the Lord works in and through us!

I have been thinking and working on goals for 2016. Goals like we want to facilitate planting two new churches this year, and to continue multiplying coaches for pastors and leaders.

A Philippians 4 Attitude

Another goal that I’m working on is more of attitudinal goal. I’d like to grow in encouraging others, and to have a more positive outlook.

The Lord has been speaking to me over the last several months about having a Philippians 4 attitude:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:4, 8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Paul encourages us to think about good and excellent things. In doing so we become more healthy, and we are more able to encourage others.

I feel like I’m entering the new year with mixed emotions. On the one hand, excited about the new opportunities, but on the other hand struggling to get started. The Lord says we are more than conquerors in Christ, so I have to preach the gospel to myself, and remember the good promises of our loving father.

Choose to be Happy in 2016!

happinessRecently my son, David Jr. introduced me to a study on happiness, presented by Shawn Achor. I was very impressed by the findings in his study. Achor is the CEO of Good Think Inc., a psychologist, and the author of “The Happiness Advantage“. In many ways Mr. Achor’s study supports what the Bible teaches about in regards to benefits of having a positive and encouraging mindset.

Shawn Achor gave a TedTalk titled: The happy secret to better work. It’s a short well done discourse that I think you will enjoy, so I’m including it here. Maybe it will help you to start the new year on a positive note, and to come up with some uplifting goals for 2016.

You can also listen to a recent EntreLeadership podcast interview with Shawn Achor—How Happiness Fuels Your Success here…

Join us in prayer as we continue on this journey of faith in 2016! Dawn and I hope to be an encouragement to you as you are to us. We gives thanks for you!
