Summer VBS in Ensenada

Singing to the Creator of the Universe

This was our fourth year of VBS in Ensenada with Skyview from Denver and the church in Ensenada. We started with La Nueva Jerusalén, but this year we have a new church plant called, Renuevo. This is a sister church plant with a strong relationship with La Nueva Jerusalén.

There are some new challenges in running a VBS with a new church plant. There aren’t as many church members to draw from or as many children that are part of the group. Yet, Petri and Yudy did a wonderful job along with their core team of recruiting friends and new believers to get involved. Many of the people who helped lead weren’t in a church as little as 6 months ago!

God the Creator of All

Most of the children that came are from families that are not yet involved in a church. Maybe they are interested, seeking or were just looking for something for their children to do that was positive during the summer months. The VBS had a different feel this time around.

The theme of the VBS was on creation. God created with world, and the galaxies. The idea of God’s involvement in creation was new to many of the children. One of the teachers, Luz Angela said that she asked the children she was teaching who created the chicken, and they responded the mother chicken. The concept of God creating the chicken was foreign to them.

Reaching New Families

Petri sharing with the parents about the importance of teaching their children about the Creator

One of the highlights of the week was parents night, on Wednesday night. Forty parents showed up. Petri and Yudy said they didn’t know how many to expect. They thought maybe only 10 or 15 would come.

Petri talked to the parents about the importance of forming their children’s character and teaching them about having a relationship with God. He told them one of the most important things is that the parents themselves set the example and grow personally in their relationship with the creator of the Universe.

The parents responded very enthusiastically. One of them mentioned that their child came home and had all kinds of questions. Their son asked if God created the world does that mean he created the fly as well? It opened the door for positive interaction among parents and their children.

Praying for Renewal in Ensenada

Petri at the end of the evening was able to invite them all to be a part of the new project, Renuevo. Renuevo means renew. They are working to bring about renewal in Ensenada! So encouraging to see God’s work and the hunger.

The parents were also invited to the closing ceremony on Friday. There was an equally strong showing. The parents were proud of their children as they finished up the week and received their certificate for being involved in the summer VBS.

Thankful for Skyview from Denver!

Thankful for our friends from Skyview Church

The group from Skyview plays a key role as they show love to the children and lead the crafts and activities. They’ve also developed a wonderful relationship with the team from Renuevo. The love of Christ is very apparent as these two groups come together to work on VBS and to enjoy the week together.

Thanks for praying for us. Please continue to pray for Petri and Yudy and their team as they seek to bring renewal to Ensenada through the good news of the gospel.

A Fun Children’s Outreach
Fun in Worship with the Children

Fun in Worship with the Children

I had a hop in my step on Sunday. I was feeling the joy of the Lord after the wonderful outreach in Tijuana on Saturday! It gave me reason to rejoice!

Redeemer (formerly Harbor North County) brought a group from their church to work alongside the Lo Mejor del Trigo church (LMT) in Rojo Gomez. Over 100 children came to the special event.

Smiles all around as the children enjoyed all the activities: face painting, coloring, gospel bracelets, bubbles, balloon figures. Then we fed the children sandwiches and ended the day with a piñata.

Blessing the Community

The Rojo Gomez church is surrounded by a number of families that struggle to survive, so this was a way to bless them. It’s also an encouragement to the church as they seek to make a difference in the community.

Our good friends, Abraham and Martha Velazquez lead the Lo Mejor del Trigo church in Rojo Gomez. They are a gift from God to us and they are a blessing to their church.

Dawn and I were also encouraged to see the way those from Redeemer jumped in and got involved. They all put their heart and soul into the effort. It was fun to work with them, and see them minister to all the children.

God is so good to give us such wonderful people to serve him with.

The church in Rojo Gomez is making a huge difference. They are located in a poor neighborhood, so they offer breakfast to the children before school. 100 children take advantage of the breakfast. The church charges less than 2 cents for the breakfast. They used to give the breakfast and didn’t charge, and they had 300 children coming.

When all the children left and we had finally cleaned we closed our day with a time of prayer for the Abraham and Martha and the church.

Prayer Requests

Abraham asked us to pray for the church in the following ways:

  1. Wisdom to guide and lead the church
  2. The physical and spiritual needs of the children and their families in the community.

Join us in prayer for these wonderful people.

One of the Summer Highlights – VBS!
David having fun at VBS

We are in the middle of weekly summer VBS in City Heights.

Our son, David Jr. is leading VBS for Harbor. He’s got a great team working with him, and they are off to an awesome start.

Dawn and I were in Mexico last week, so we weren’t able to join them.  Yet we got a good idea of how well things went when we saw all the smiles in the pictures. They told the story.

The three of our children, David, Jon and Hannah spent the last 12 summers enjoying a super VBS program that Village Seven Presbyterian Church put on in Colorado Springs. It was one of the highlights of the summer for them. David contacted Robin Gorab who’s led the children’s ministry at V7 for many years. Robin gave David some of the material she developed to help him plan out and direct the VBS here. The theme they chose is Upward Bound!

It’s so encouraging to see our kids contributing to kingdom work. We are also thrilled that the gospel is going forth and touching the lives of many children in the City Heights neighborhood.

Pray for God’s Continued Blessing

Pray with us that the Lord uses VBS to bring positive change to the children and their families!

Fun Activities and the Bible

I was overwhelmed by God’s goodness this past Saturday when we ministered in Tijuana. I led a group of 23 down to Pípila in the eastern part of TJ to work with our friends from Lo Mejor del Trigo.

Our goal was to minister alongside the Lo Mejor del Trigo church in Pípila, in order to bless the community through an outreach to children. One hundred and twenty children came. They were treated to all kinds of fun activities: face painting, balloons, weaving a lanyard, making beaded bracelets and necklaces, soccer and a Bible story. The kids loved it.

Our team from Harbor Mid-City did a wonderful job working with the children and those from the Pípila church. Cindy Frueh organized and coordinated our group to ensure that all the activities were fun, and done well. Everyone had such a wonderful attitude. The light of Christ shined brightly.

We give thanks for Cindy, and all of those who helped. She did such a great job leading, that it took a lot of pressure off of me.

Since things went so well, it gives me much hope for the future that we can come alongside the church in Pípila and be a blessing to them.

Give thanks to the Lord with me for the marvelous work he has done, and he continues to do!

Fun with the Piñata

Fun with the Piñata

Dale, Dale, Dale …

That’s how the song begins when the children are attempting to break the piñata. After the children got their fill of all the other activities we finished it off with a big piñata filled with candy. Then since the children worked up an appetite, our Mexican “hermanos” made a wonderful meal with tamales, beans and salad for them.

I must admit before the event I was a little worried about all the details coming together. I don’t feel like organizing all the logistics is my strong point. Yet the Lord chose to work through my weaknesses. It was a success, because of the wonderful team of people from our church and from the Mexican church that came together to serve.

God Causes the Increase

It was also encouraging interacting with those from the church. They told us how the church is growing. In the last month the church has seen four new families come to Christ, and get involved in the life of the church.

God is working in Tijuana in a powerful way.

Since the church just started in November they still don’t have many young families with children, so we are hoping that this children’s event will give them a big boost towards reaching young families in the community. Join us in prayer for this need. O Lord, hear our prayer!
