LMT #24 is coming!

Pastor Daniel Nuñez and Victor Bravo with Dave

Pastor Daniel Nuñez the leader of Lo Mejor del Trigo and Victor Bravo (in the middle), one of our newest church planters with Dave.

This month is a big one. Some thrilling things are going to take place.

On March 14th and 21st a group from the former Harbor network of churches (Redeemer SD, Bridge, Grace Renewal, Harbor City Church, Harbor UTC, and Harbor Miramesa) is going to go to Rosarito, just south of Tijuana to build a church. This project will help Lo Mejor del Trigo (LMT) start a new church. It will be church number 24. Pastor Victor Bravo will lead this church along with his wife, Sol.

Dawn and I are excited to be a part of this project. We give thanks to the Lord and to our friends from Lo Mejor del Trigo and the collection of former Harbor Churches. We feel so blessed to serve the Lord here on the border and to work with Pastor Daniel Nuñez who leads LMT.

Victor and his wife, Sol have a strong call and they are wonderfully gifted. We look forward to what God is going to do through them in this new church. We love being a part of kingdom expansion with them.

Lift Up Your Hands In Prayer!

Join us in prayer as we finish bringing the team together that will build this church. There are a number of logistical details that still have to come together. I feel like the Lord has given us an added measure of grace, but if you’ve been following our story you are aware that we are in the midst of a huge trial.

We continue to pray and to look to the Lord for our daughter, Hannah. God is bringing healing, but this trial has gone on for a while now, so at times we do grow weary.

Continue to lift us up in prayer. Continue to pray for Hannah’s complete healing! Every time I get a little down, and I send out a plea for prayer God responds. My family and I see and feel the difference. Do not grow weary in doing good. I realize as this trial wears on, that even those who are lifting us up get tired. You are making a difference.

We thank the Lord for you! As we have some busy and important weeks coming up we need extra prayer covering.

Pastor Leo Nevarez and his wife, Gloria

Pastor Leo Nevarez and his wife, Gloria

God has done some amazing things in the Rosarito church plant. Every time I talk to pastor Leo Nevarez I come away encouraged.

Harbor partnered with Lo Mejor del Trigo to build the new church in May of 2012. A friend in Phoenix suggested that I introduce Leo to the Youth With a Mission (YWAM) ministry which is right near Leo’s church in Rosarito.

Leo and his wife, Gloria have developed a close relationship with YWAM. They’ve begun to minister in the community together. It’s a wonderful example of kingdom work.

On January 19th YWAM is going to help Leo add-on to their present church, so that they can have more space to minister to children from the community. The Lord is doing a good work as these ministries come together in seeking to be a blessing in the community.

Earlier this last summer someone read a blog post I had written about the homeless in Rosarito. God moved them to contact Leo, and they’ve begun to help to reach out. They donated 200 backpacks to children, so that they could carry their books to school. Then they gave some land that the church is hoping to use as a drug rehab center. The Lord uses things like this to bring about change.

I praise the Lord with Leo and Gloria as God’s blessings keep rolling down.

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

–Psalm 103:1-5 (ESV)

Lord, continue to encourage Leo and Gloria and their church as they reach out in their community, as they seek to make a difference for Christ.

Daniel Nuñez, Ray Call and Dave - The Three Amigos!

Daniel Nuñez, Ray Call and Dave - The Three Amigos!

On Wednesday, Dawn, Hannah, Ray and I were able to explore Tijuana with Daniel & Yolanda Nuñez. We had a wonderful time! The more time I spend with Daniel and Yolanda the more I love them. They are great servants of the Lord. It’s a real privilege to minister with them.

We explored much of TJ and Rosarito. It was exciting to be back in Mexico. Hannah hadn’t been in Mexico for 12 years, and it’s been a several years for Dawn as well. It encouraged my heart that they enjoyed being there as well. Hannah said it brought back a lot of memories from her childhood.

Our prayer is that Tijuana will be reached with the gospel. Tijuana is a global city with over 2 million people. It’s exhilarating to see the city, and to get to know it a little better.

There were many positives to being in TJ, and it was great to get some good time with Daniel and Yolanda. I just love the colors, the life, the food, the Spanish, the culture, etc. My friend, Tom Steller says, “Mexico is a part of you, because of all your time there.” I think he’s got a point. It has marked me and my family.

Yet even with all the good things that I love, there are some terrible things in TJ. It was sad to drive along the border fence, and see all the crosses for many people who died trying to cross into the U.S..

We also saw the women of the street in the light of day. Sex trafficking is legal in TJ. There were big signs on the hotel advertising rooms for $99 Pesos an hour, about $8 USD. Wow, so sad! When I showed my friend, Tom a the picture I took of the sign he said it made him sick. That is an appropriate response.

“O God, that the gospel would powerfully go forth in the city of Tijuana and bring transformation!”

One of the many reasons we are enthused about our partnership with Daniel Nuñez is that he is working to see the city transformed by the good news of Christ. I shot some video of Daniel while we were there. I will try to post it soon.

When we were in Rosarito we visited the property where Harbor Church is going to help Daniel build one of the next church plants. They have 11 churches now, and they are hoping to have 15 soon. I think they are working on starting at least two now!

Thank you, Lord for the good work you are doing. We do trust you and look to you to minister in a powerful way in TJ. Bless the city, and use us to be a blessing. Amen!

P.S. Our ESL training class starts tomorrow on Friday, March 23 through Saturday, March 24. Please pray for God’s rich blessing and protection. We’ve already had some problems with the electricity, so we had to move the location for the training. We have 24 participants coming!
